AFTER an eventful three-year posting in Jakarta, World Bank Country Director for Indonesia, Mark Baird, is retiring. Since he took up his job in 1999, he lived through the watershed 1999 elections, the never-ending Bank Bali scandal, the devastation and rebuilding of East Timor, the UNHCR killings in Atambua, the bombings in Jakarta-including the September 2000 blast in the building where his office is located-and, more recently, the controversial Buloggate, Manulife and Tommy Suharto cases. But in spite of all that, he's still upbeat about Indonesia.
“This is all part of a bigger story-the long-term process of building a democratic and well-governed nation," said the New Zealand-born economist. He certainly has enough material for an action-packed, globalized political thriller and perhaps that's what he might do in Auckland, where he's settling down after 25 years on the road for the World Bank. But the choice for New Zealand's largest city is his wife's, who insists on living where the couple has easy access to Asian groceries and restaurants.
